Key Ingredient in RegeneRx's RGN-352 Treatment for MS Wins Australian Patent

Multiple Sclerosis News Today - Jan 12, 2017
The patent is for Thymosin beta 4 (Tβ4), the driving force in the company's RGN-352 treatment. RGN-352 promotes myelination, or the production of protective myelin sheaths for damaged neurons and other nerve cells associated with MS. The protection ...

Microglia Give Astrocytes License to Kill

Alzforum - Jan 21, 2017
A1 astrocytes weaken synapses and kill neurons and myelin-producing cells. The authors find A1 astrocytes in a variety of injuries and disease states, including Alzheimer's, and suggest they are at the root of neuron death in these cases. By simply ...

As people age, the brain changes in both good ways and bad

The Economist - Jan 12, 2017
One points the finger at myelin, a white, fatty substance that coats axons, the tendrils that carry signals from one neuron to another. Steady reductions in myelin as people age may be slowing down these connections. Another possibility, says Timothy ...

Myelin Shackles and the Iron Horse

by: D. M. Sommo
Myelin Shackles and the Iron Horse is a real-life story about my mother, Josephine, fondly known to those who loved her as Babe. To some, she might have been considered to be just an "invisible person" She never held a title, and she didn't have a fancy education. She never worked in a high-paying job. She surpassed that mundane stuff early in her life. She held heaven in her hands and was glad to give it out to anyone who wanted a piece of it. Read about this incredible human being and the victories that she won.

Myelination and Demyelination: Implications for Multiple Sclerosis

by: Seung U. Kim
In June 1987, neurobiologists, immunologists, molecular biologists, virologists and neurologists from several countries met in Vancouver to discuss recent advances of relevance to multiple sclerosis. The symposium was a part of the 22nd Canadian Congress of Neurological Sciences meeting and was sponsored by funds from the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada and the Medical Research Council of Canada. The presentations covered five major topics: basic neurobiology, molecular biology, the role of viruses in demyelination, immune function and dysfunction in multiple sclerosis, and clinical magnetic resonance imaging studies.

Myelin: Biology and Chemistry

by: Russell E. Martenson
Myelin: Biology and Chemistry provides in-depth reviews and discussions regarding recent findings in the biology and chemistry of myelin. Topics are interdisciplinary and carry readers from the cellular level to that of the gene. Research in demyelinating diseases (naturally occurring and experimentally produced) is described and emphasizes autoimmune and virally induced mechanisms. Advances in molecular biology, such as those that provide details of the structures of the major myelin proteins, demonstrate the control of their synthesis, and explore the mutations within their genes that disrupt the process of myelination, are discussed in depth.
